Our BELOVED George Lee Strand departed from us at home early Sunday morning. George who was also known as “Brother” was born at home to George and Nettie (Ames} Strand in Philadelphia, Pa. He was the fourth child of six, and the first-born son.
George attended Overbrook High School and graduated in June 1955, and in July entered the Marine Corp, and became an Aircraft Navigation Systems Specialist in the Marine Aviation Mechanic Division. After Marine service, George worked for the United States Post Office at 30th & Market until his retirement in January 1992. He completed many hours of continuing education, retiring from a Supervisory position where he oversaw all mechanical operations.
George was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grand father, and a man of deep and abiding faith who was a provider and protector. He was baptized at an early age at Tasker St. Missionary Baptist Church in South Philadelphia. While participating in a men’s Bible Study Group, George rededicated his life to Christ, then joined St. Matthew’s Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Raymond M. Gordon, Senior Pastor.
A Bible believing Christian, he lived with conviction, strength and honesty. Known for speaking his mind and standing firmly on what he believed. Those who truly knew him, remember him as a man of both strength and substance, whose words were direct, whose faith was steadfast, and whose love was genuine. The ultimate “Mr. Fix It”: Master carpenter, electrician, mechanic, plumber, he loved working outside.
George came to hear Paulett in concert at Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City in May 1978. By August 27,1978 they were married and shared 48 years of loving matrimony. Although born and raised in the city, George found a new love after building a home in Williamstown, NJ, where he resided until his earthy departure.
George was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pauline, and brother Herbert. He leaves to cherish his love and memory: wife Paulett Marie; son George (Michelle); daughter Wendy; his wonderful sisters and brother: Dorothy, Geraldine, and Eric (Sylvia); 5 granddaughters: Amber, Samira, Hadiyah, Ayana, Asha; 2 great grandchildren: Kyleigh and Kingston; a host of awesome nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. George was well loved by everyone who met him, and he will truly be missed by so many.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday, November 5, 2026, from 9:00 – 10:00 AM, at St. Matthew’s Baptist Church, 245 Glassboro Road (Route 322), Williamstown, NJ. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 240 N. Tuckahoe Road, Williamstown, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in George’s memory to the https://montfordpointmarines.org/Donate
