Gerald Joseph Swartz

July 7, 1948 - May 1, 2026

Gerald Swartz—affectionately known to those who loved him as Jerry, Uncle Jerry, or Pop-Pop—passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026. He now joins those who passed before him: his parents, Gerald and Margarete Swartz; his sisters, Margret Swartz and Loretta Hinger; and his niece, Meghan Hinger.

Nearly four years ago, Jerry was given only six months to live. But Jerry was never one to be told what to do. In true "Swartz stubborn" fashion, he defied the odds and gave his family and friends nearly four more years of laughter and memories. Those lucky enough to have known him will forever miss his quick wit and the humor he brought into every room.

Jerry was defined by an unwavering work ethic and a deep sense of duty. Whether he was serving in the United States Army or working as a proud Teamster, he believed that any job worth doing was worth doing right. He put 100% effort into every task, a trait that was especially clear in his later years as a delivery driver for Wonder Bread. He truly loved that job and the people he met along his route, approaching each day with the same reliability and dedication that characterized his entire life.

A proud graduate of Heidelberg American High School, Jerry was an accomplished football player in his youth. He remained a loyal alumnus, keeping in close touch with his classmates and attending reunions whenever possible. He also remained deeply connected to his heritage through his love of food. His mother was an amazing baker and cook, and Jerry spent years chasing the flavors of her kitchen—especially her potica (traditional nut bread). Since no one in the family made the traditional nut bread anymore, Jerry was always on a mission to find a loaf that lived up to his mother's. This "potica hunt" became a legendary family affair; at one point, everyone had several loaves stashed in their freezers, as Jerry would discover a new source and ship loaves to family members near and far in hopes of finally finding "the one."

Jerry was the life of the party and arguably the best card dealer around. Whether it was a competitive game of Hand and Foot or Rummikub, he was always ready to play—though he wasn't above tricking an unsuspecting younger relative into a round of "52-card pickup" just for a laugh. An avid lover of sports, he was always game for wiffleball or badminton in the backyard, and he never missed a chance to root on his Phillies and Eagles. While he didn't have children of his own, he was a cornerstone in the lives of the children in his life. He stayed young at heart by being truly interested in their worlds, always preferring to talk about their sports and hobbies rather than himself. His tag line, "How ya doin?'" was always a hit with the kids, who quickly learned to repeat it back to him.

For many years, and especially during the challenges of his illness, Jerry's devoted partner, Patricia Bedford, stood by his side with unwavering support. While the void he leaves in her life is immeasurable, her devotion ensured his final years were filled with care and companionship.

Jerry will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his sister, Cathy Swartz (and her husband Lee Adams); his brother-in-law, Bob Hinger (and his girlfriend Karen Opel); and his nieces, M.C. Spruill (and her husband Jim), Sarah Hinger (and her fiance Jordan Propper), and Kathleen Hinger; as well as his great-nephew and niece, Sean and Katie Spruill. Jerry also holds a lasting place in the hearts of Pat's family, including her son Joey Dimeo, granddaughter Julia Dimeo (and her partner Chris Bruni), and great-grandchildren Cadance, Jade, and Chase Bruni.

In accordance with Jerry's wishes, a private memorial service and Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he will be laid to rest alongside his sister, Margret. His sister, Loretta, also rests in peace there; reuniting the siblings in eternal peace.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to:The Charlottesville Free Clinic,901 Preston Avenue, Suite 300,Charlottesville, VA22903 or by visiting http://www.cvillefreeclinic.org

These gifts are made in loving memory of Jerry's niece, Meghan, a devoted nurse and the CEO of the Charlottesville Free Clinic, who passed away unexpectedly in 2025. Meghan was always just a phone call away for any of Jerry's needs, frequently traveling to New Jersey to provide him with tireless support and care. These donations serve to honor the beautiful, shared legacy of both Jerry and Meghan.

We find comfort in one of Meghan's favorite quotes:
'To live in the hearts of others is not to die.'
Jerry's warmth, his humor, and the echo of his laughter are woven into our hearts forever.
