John M. Sofia, 87, of Pitman, NJ, affectionately known as "Pop," went home to be with the LORD on December 21, 2009. Born and raised in Glassboro, he lived in Cross Keys before moving to Pitman in 1967.
"Pop" was a machine shop foreman for Owens Illinois in Glassboro before retiring. He also owned Sofia's High Fidelity Sales for many years and installed sound systems in churches throughout the tri state area. He was a US Army veteran of WWII, serving as a corporal in the Signal Corps and a member of the local VFW. "Pop" was a charter member and former trustee of the Gloucester County Community Church where he spent many hours working wherever his gifted hands were needed.
Beloved husband of Mary "Polly" Sofia (nee Smith) for 63 years. Devoted father of Sondra Clendenen (Jerry) and Dr. Bruce Sofia (Sheryl). Dear brother of Vera Farrar (Guy). Loving grandfather of Jason Clendenen (Joanna), Joel Sofia (Emily) and Noelle Sofia-Starr (Adam). Loving great-grandfather of "AJ" and Levi, Rachael, and Eliana. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Saturday, January 16th from 9:00 – 11:00 am at the Gloucester County Community Church, 359 Chapel Heights Road, Washington Twp. (Sewell) NJ 08080, where a Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 am.
A private family viewing and burial in Bethel Cemetery in Hurffville was held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the GCCC Building Fund at the address listed above.
